Beautiful Bird Journal

It’s time once again for another round of blog hopping with the fabulous designers of Designer Craft Connection. The first Monday of every month we pick a theme and then create a project around that theme. Since the first Monday of this month fell a day after New Year’s we decided to postpone our blog hop until today. 

This month’s theme is journaling. I was very excited about our journaling theme because I love to design and create journals! You can do so many things in creating a journal. They can be fun & simple or you can go all out and create something elaborate. Whichever way you choose to go, your journals should say something about yourself or the person you are creating it for. 

The journal that I am sharing with you today, I designed for a friend of mine, Brenda Pinnick, another outstanding designer. Brenda had just finished creating a new line of rubber stamps and she was going to appear on the Home Shopping Network to introduce them to the crafting world. She sent me all of her new stamp line and asked me to design something using them. Well, needless to say you don’t have to ask me twice, so I set out to create this beautiful bird journal. I am so pleased to announce that my friend, Brenda Pinnick, color guru extraordinaire, has started a new blog! On the new blog, ColorCafe, you will find a professional designer sharing his or/her creativity with projects that are all about color! Each day will feature a new designer. Perfect Words

As a rubber stamper and scrapbooker, I am always looking for the perfect words to add to my cards and pages. For me, there is nothing worse than getting my card or scrapbook page finished and then sitting at my desk staring at my design because I have no idea what words I want to use to convey just the right feelings. 

I know that it seems kind of silly that a person like me has trouble sometimes finding just the right words; I do write a twice weekly blog after all. But wording can be just like inspiration, and even creative people need a little help once in awhile. So where do you go for help with the perfect words? Well, for me, I look to a few different places. 

Rubber Stamps- Once rubber stamping became a huge hit in the creative industry about 15 to 20 years ago, you could find a stamp for just about everything, except words or phrases. I am so happy to say that has changed. Now, you can find a word or phrase stamp on all different topics. Check them out the next time you're at your local rubber stamp or scrapbook store. 

The Internet- The Internet is a great resource for finding words, phrases, and quotes to use on your cards and scrapbook pages. All you need to do is type “Perfect words for cards and scrapbook pages” into your search engine and in seconds you will have access to thousands of websites on this topic. 

Books- Books are another great way to gather this information. Check out your local Barnes & Noble, your local library, or Amazon.com. You'll be amazed at what you can find.

Snowman Paint Can & Wearable Pin

I really hope that you enjoyed my last post on Monday, because I decided to carry on the snowman theme by creating a snowman paint can gift container with a detachable, wearable pin. 

This project is fabulous for a few reasons. The first one being that I saved money by using the same rubber stamp on all the projects. Who doesn’t want to save money around the holidays? The second reason is the paint can is the perfect gift container to put your card and ornament in to give to your loved ones. And the last reason is by creating the snowman pin as part of the decoration on the paint can, you can give your loved ones an additional gift with the wearable snowman pin! On top of all of that, it is so darn cute, it’s bound to make your loved ones really happy. What could be better than that?!

If those aren’t reasons enough for you to create this project for your loved ones, let me give you one more. It’s fast and easy to make, and I don’t know about you, but those are two words that I love to hear during the holiday season. 

I hope that I have inspired you to try to stop the madness of the holiday season by sitting down, picking up your rubber stamps and scrapbook supplies, and create something fun for your loved ones. You are sure to put a smile on your family’s faces and I guarantee that it will put a smile on yours.

Snowman Paint Can & Wearable Pin

Materials

• Paint can- gallon size
• Pattern paper- two different types
• Ribbon- 2” wide
• Basswood- 3/32” wide  
• White card stock
• Vivid! dye based inkpad-Black by Clearsnap
• Watercolor pencils
• Wire- 24 gauge Silver & White
• Shake-On Beads
• Paper, Rock, Scissors glitter paint
• Aleene’s Paper Glaze
• Aleene’s Memory Glue
• Aleene’s Platinum Bond Glass and Bead Slick Surfaces Adhesive
• White acrylic paint
• Wire cutters
• Scissors
• Exacto knife
• Paintbrush
• Pin back
• Hole punch
• Rubber Stamps:
• Snowman with Heart
• Hanging Ornament

Instructions

Cover entire paint can with two different pattern papers. Stamp snowman once and ornament six times on white card stock with black inkpad. Color images with watercolor pencils. Cut out images. 

With silver wire, make six small loops. Adhere to the back of ornaments. Cut white wire and shape into six ornament hangers. Attach to ornament loops.

For the pin, stamp snowman on white card stock with black inkpad. Color with watercolor

pencils. Cut out. Lay image on wood. Trace with a pencil. Cut wood with Exacto knife. Paint

wood with white paint. Let dry. Adhere stamped image to wood. 

Apply a thin layer of Paper Glaze over stamped image. Let dry for 24 hours. When dry,

adhere green glitter paint to holly leaves. Add red and white beads with Glass & Bead

adhesive. See picture for placement if needed. Adhere pin to back of wood image.

Tie ribbon around paint can. Adhere ornaments to paint can. Attach snowman pin to

center of the bow.

Christmas Card and Ornament

It’s time for another Designer Craft Connection Blog Hop! This time we were supposed to post either a Holiday themed project or be part of “When Creativity Knocks Sock Monkey Challenge”. I didn’t get a chance to get involved with the Sock Monkey mania, but with this hop you’ll have the opportunity to check out both themes! I hope that enjoy all the holiday hopping. I have been busy working on some projects to share with all of you. The first project being a card and ornament set that I made a few years ago for my family that I updated a little bit for the current holidays. 

I absolutely love making cards for the holiday season for my family and friends, and if times allows I also love to create ornaments that match my cards. Your cards and ornaments don’t need to be elaborate unless you have the time and if that’s the case, I say go for it! Since my time is usually limited around the holidays, I like to keep my projects fairly simple, but always something fun! Snowmen are my favorite holiday characters and I wanted to create something with these cute snowman rubber stamps that I have. They were just perfect for the projects I wanted to create.

I hope that you’ll consider creating an ornament that matches your cards, because your card may get pitched out with the Christmas tree, but the ornament will be saved forever!

Christmas Card and Ornament

Materials

• Cardboard
• Card stock- White, Blue and Purple
• Pattern paper
• Wire 24 gauge- Blue
• Eyelets- Blue
• Snowflake brad
• Various fibers
• Ribbon- Blue
• Watercolor pencils
• Trim- Silver
• Slot punch
• Hole punch
• Aleene’s Memory Glue  
• Paper, Rock, Scissors white glitter paint
• Vivid! Dye Based inkpad- Black
• Rubber Stamps:
• Snowman with Heart
• Snowman Banner

 Instructions

 For the card, fold blue card stock to 4 ¼” x 5 ½”. Cut papers as follows: White card stock   4” x 5 ¼”, Purple card stock 3” x 4 ¼”, and Snowflake pattern paper 3 ¼” x 4 ½”. Use  slot  punch on all four corners of white card stock. Attach pattern paper to white card stock. Adhere papers to blue card.

Cut white card stock 2 ½” x 4”. Cut white and purple card stock in tag shapes. Stamp

snowman on white tag with black inkpad. Color image with watercolor pencils. Adhere white tag to purple tag. Punch hole in top. Add various fibers. Adhere to card front.

 For the ornament, cut cardboard and blue card stock 3 ¼” x 4 ½”. Cut pattern paper

 3” x 4 ¼”. Cut white card stock 2 ½” x 4”.  Stamp snowman on white card stock with black inkpad. Color with watercolor pencils. Layer papers and adhere together. Adhere silver trim around the edges.

Punch two holes at the top and one hole at the bottom. Attach eyelets. Tie fibers through

the bottom eyelet. Attach snowflake brad.

 For the top portion of the ornament, stamp snowman banner on a scrap piece of white

card stock with black inkpad. Color image with watercolor pencils. Cut out image. Lay
image on cardboard. Trace image with a pencil. Cut out.

Adhere stamped image to cardboard. Punch two holes in the bottom of the image. Attach

eyelets. Cut two pieces of wire 6” long. Wrap around a small paintbrush. Attach wire to
both stamped images.

  Make a small loop with ribbon. Adhere to the back of snowman banner to form a hanger.

Holidays at the Rojas House

Today I want to share some pictures of what my house looks like during the holiday season. Be warned: These pictures are not for the weak of heart. The pictures you’re about to see are of a serious crafter! Or as my husband always likes to say, a crazy crafter! Due to space, I did not include pictures of my kitchen or downstairs bathroom. And yes, I decorate my bathrooms too!!

Designer Craft Connection Blog Hop

Yes, it’s another round of happy hopping with the Designer Craft Connection!

Thanksgiving is almost here and I would like to ask, “What are you thankful for?” I would love to hear from you, so please leave me a comment on my blog and share your thoughts and feelings.

For me, that question has a few answers to it. Being a person who has lived all of her adult life with a chronic illness, Crohn’s Disease, I am thankful to be alive each year. After 51 hospitalizations and 21 surgeries, I always wonder if I’ll see the next year, but blessings and thanks to God, I am still here.

I am also thankful for my family, my husband Rich, my two children, Richelle & Michael and my mom, because without them I would not be here. They bring me so much joy and happiness. I’m thankful for my extended family and all of my friends. I am blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people. I am thankful for my fur kids, Ruby Renee and Coca Cola. They fill my life with laughter with al of the goofy things they do, like wet-nosed doggy kisses. I am so thankful for a lot of other things too, but it would take me days to list them all.

One more thing that I’m thankful for is spending time eating, drinking and laughing with my family at Thanksgiving dinner. Since most people spend the Thanksgiving holiday with their families, what would be a better way of showing them how much you love them by creating a beautiful  table setting for your Thanksgiving dinner! How great would it be to have a handmade dinner plate, a name card gift basket, napkin rings and candle decorations are exactly what you are getting with this great project. When I first created this table setting those were the thoughts going through my head.

So, when you’re sitting around in your craft room creating this beautiful project for your next Thanksgiving holiday, make sure you stop long enough to give thanks for all of the wonderful blessings in  your life. And please say a prayer or two for all of our service men and women who are away from their families during this holiday season.

Thanksgiving Table Setting

Supplies

• Glass plate
• Glass candleholders
• Taper candles 12”- Yellow
• White card stock
• White printer paper
• Black dye based inkpad
• Tan tissue paper
• Faber-Castell chalk pencils
• Miniature basket
• Matte sealer
• Aleene’s Reverse Collage Glue
• Glue gun
• Foam brush
• Exacto knife
• Black permanent marker
• Autumn pattern paper
• Napkin
• Gold elastic thread
• Rubber stamps-
• Cornucopia, Acorn swag, Large Indian Corn, Turkey Banner, Turkey

Instructions

1.   Stamp cornucopia one time and acorn swag four times on white printer paper with black inkpad. Stamp turkey and turkey banner once, and Indian corn two times on white card stock with black inkpad. Color all stamped images with chalk pencils and spray with sealer. 

2.   Cut out stamped images with Exacto knife. Wash and dry plate thoroughly. Turn plate over so the bottom is facing up. Using a foam brush, apply reverse collage glue to entire plate. Lay cornucopia and acorn swag images onto the plate. Cover images with reverse collage glue. Tear tan tissue paper into pieces and adhere to the plate, using reverse collage glue. Cover the entire plate. Repeat the process three times. Let dry 24 hours before using. Hand wash plate with a damp cloth after use. Do not put plate in the dishwasher. 

3.   For napkin ring, make a circle out of a strip of pattern paper and glue to the back of turkey image with glue gun. Fold napkin and slip through the napkin ring. Next, glue gold elastic thread to the back of the Indian corn images and slide onto the taper candles. For a different twist on the “name card”, write name on the turkey banner image and glue to the handle of a miniature basket. Fill baskets with candy for a treat your guest can take home with them!
